Summary
John Howell was a veterinary scientist and pathologist of international renown whose research focussed on neuromuscular diseases and in particular the pathology of copper toxicity in animals. His research provided useful models for neuromuscular diseases in humans. He established a number of long-term collaborations with researchers in Australia and overseas. Howell was appointed inaugural Professor of Pathology in the Veterinary School at Murdoch University in 1974, and served the University as Dean of the School and as Pro Vice-Chancellor Research. He also held senior positions in professional and regulatory organisations, including the Australian Neuromuscular Research Institute, the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Western Australia and the Animal Resources Authority of Western Australia.
