Summary
Steward Smith was a physician who held senior teaching positions in several of Sydney's principal hospitals and well as lecturing at the University of Sydney. He was widely respected for his teaching in clinical medicine. Smith was a member of the Association of Physicians of Australasia and influential in the establishment of he Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He held executive roles in the College for nearly 20 years, including that of President 1946 - 1948. As inaugural treasurer he responsible for setting policy for the financial affairs of College and the management of College property. He was also active in promoting medical research, advocating the setting up the medical research fund of the Life Offices Association of Australia, and serving as Chairman of the Research Advisory Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
