Summary
Hugh Murray was a metallurgical engineer whose career was in the service of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company in Tasmania. He started as a metallurgist doing research in the Company's flotation plant laboratory, and rose to hold senior management positions. For nearly 20 years he was General Manager. In this role he invested in exploration that revealed new ore bodies, ensuring the viability of the Company. Under Murray's direction metallurgical processes were improved and the inefficient Abt railway was replaced with road haulage. In 1953 he became a Commissioner of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, also serving as Chairman of the Commission's Advisory Committee on Uranium Mining.
