Gynlais Oughton (Gyn) Jones spent his entire career with the Victorian Department of Agriculture, mostly in farming region of Kerang. When he arrived in Kerang in 1957 the area was suffering from high salinity making vast areas of farm land unusable. His unique approaches helped lower and control salinity making the region more productive and sustainable. Jones set up classes to educate farmers on how to interpret weather forecasts to improve yields; pioneered research farms in Kerang and Swan Hill to combat salinity at the source; improved irrigation practices and investigated the areas groundwater.
