Educated: Hobart High School; BSc, University of Tasmania, 1970. Joined the Bureau of Meteorology as a cadet meteorologist in 1968. Was posted to Western Australia Regional Office and Perth Airport before moving to the Northern Territory (Darwin) in 1973, later officer in charge at Alice Springs. Resigned from the Bureau in 1978 to work briefly for a private firm in Scotland, providing forecasts for the North Sea oil rigs and the general European area. He rejoined the Bureau in Darwin in 1979 and then spent four years at RAAF Butterworth (Malaysia), 1980-1984. Worked in the Special Services Section at Hobart during 1984 and returned to Darwin in 1985. Regional Director, Northern Territory, 1987-
