Alec Costin was a Senior Research Scientist and Chief Research Scientist at the Division of Plant Industry, CSIRO from 1955-1974. He is an international authority on the ecology of high mountain and high latitude ecosystems.

Soil Conservationist, Soil Conservation Service of New South Wales 1942-50, Thomas Lawrance Pawlett Scholar, University of Sydney 1950-51, Australian Services Canteens Scholar, University of Sydney and overseas 1951-53, Principal Research Officer, Soil Conservation Authority of Victoria 1953-55, Senior Research Scientist - Chief Research Scientist, Division of Plant Industry, CSIRO 1955-74, Visiting Fellow, Department of Biogeography and Geomorphology, Australian National University 1973-74, Visiting Fellow, Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, Australian National University 1976-77.
