Summary
In 1991 the Proprietary Medicines Advisory Committee's functions were transferred from the Victorian Government to the Federal Government. Here, the Committee formed part of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). This was established in 1991 as a result of the Therapeutic Goods Act of 1989. The TGA has been under the control of various Government Departments. In the year 2000 it is part of the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care.
'The Australian community expects that medicines and medical devices in the marketplace are safe and of high quality, to a standard at least equal to that of comparable countries. The objective of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, which came into effect on 15 February 1991, is to provide a national framework for the regulation of therapeutic goods in Australia and ensure their quality, safety and efficacy.'
