Description

Review of the history of major dam design and construction in Australia, by era, by type and changes over time due to concerns about floods and safety.

Includes brief biographies of contributors; details of Australian dam authorities; bibliography; index to dams, weirs, barrages, rivers, reservoirs and lakes; and a general subject index.

Abstract

An historical overview of dam building in Australia was initially produced as part of the Heritage Dams Project, that had its genesis in 1995 when the National Committee on Engineering Heritage, Institution of Engineers Australia, obtained a grant from the National Estate Grants Program to carry out 'A review of major dams in Australia'. The project report was completed and presented to the Australian Heritage Commission, in June 1999.

Earlier at the the 1998 ANCOLD Conference, it was agreed that the summary histories and related research were worthy of being published. After peer review of drafts, and two additional chapters on spillways and safety were written, this book was published in time for the 2000 ANCOLD Conference.
