- Abstract
Faced with the pressing need to transport both people and goods over great distances, provide safe ports, and ensure adequate water supplies for rural towns, the state's engineering had to develop ingenious new solutions - the world's first electrically operated swing-bridge, and the thinnest curved dam wall, for example. Lighthouses, bridges and dams had to be built cheaply and safely; estuaries had to be dredged, land reclaimed and breakwaters erected.
This book is testament to the successes of these engineers in meeting the technological and design challenges of this fascinating era.- Source
