Abstract

The initiative for this paper arose through the efforts of the National Committee for Applied Mechanics of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. It was felt that while most engineers are aware of fracture as an important topic in their discipline, many may not have had the chance to study fracture mechanics during their undergraduate course. These notes are intended to give a general introduction to fracture including exposure to most of the currently used analytical techniques. Incorporated in this philosophy is the provision of basic teaching material at an elementary level, the introduction of some of the newer and recently developed methods in fracture mechanics and reference to additional material for further study. The main thrust of the notes is on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) as applied to relatively brittle materials with emphasis on the stress intensity factor and system energy release rate methods. However, the limitations of this approach are highlighted to avoid misuse and show, in the case of highly ductile materials, the need for Elastic Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM) which uses the J-integral, COD methods and Strain Energy Density techniques. In addition to basic theory, the notes also explain the use of fracture mechanics within the context of the finite element method and conclude with some useful applications to a variety of practical problems. In preparing the notes it has been assumed that readers will have a general background in engineering, materials science or physics.
