- Abstract
Currently used testing equipment does not allow accurate assessment of protection equipment performance during power system transient conditions. Much work has been done on computer simulations of transient waveforms and these models are now generally accepted. It is then useful if the data generated by these simulations can be used to aid protection equipment testing. The test system described in the paper is capable of producing voltages and currents accurately representing the simulation waveforms. This system can also be applied to more routine testing of protection relays, with capabilities in excess of commercially available test sets. A description is given of both the hardware and the operating software of the system, and test results are provided to illustrate its effectiveness.
