- Abstract
There are three undesirable features of dragline electrical loading characteristics which can adversely affect supply voltage quality: large transient power swings; starting inrush currents of the mg set synchronous drive motors; and underdamped power oscillations associated with the synchronous motors. The paper describes enhancements which have been made to compensate for these characteristics. A fast reactive power controller compensates for transient power swings; a soft start system for the mg sets avoids starting inrush currents; and a special design of the dc motor drive systems limits the amplitudes of load powers which can excite the synchronous motors near their natural frequency.
