- Abstract
Electric vehicles of both fixed wire and battery powered types have an important role to play in urban transportation. An energy conscious approach to new vehicle design is necessary to ensure satisfactory operating economics of the former, and optimum range and performance of the latter. In this paper a number of simple expressions are derived which relate motive energy requirements, range and operating costs to basic design choices. Formulae for estimating 'energy efficiency' under both motoring and regenerative braking conditions are developed.
