Abstract

This paper describes a new method for the design of plastic concrete, applicable to both field and laboratory mix designs and suitable for all aggregates. A brief account of the basis and experimental work leading to the formulation of the design procedure is given, together with an examination of the influence of different types and gradings of aggregate on the optimum mix proportions.
Using this method of design in the field it is possible for an inexperienced operator to determine the most economical concrete mix of the desired strength from any available aggregates within about two hours. The method has been found to be equally applicable to well-graded or poorly-graded aggregates, and in this respect has a decided advantage over methods based on sieve analysis.
