This paper, No.1087, originated in the Sydney Division of The Institution, and is to be presented during the Engineering Conference, 1952, at Sydney.
At the time of construction of the Dock the authors were both Inspecting Engineers, Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Sydney.Mr. W. Hudson, BSc(Eng), is now Commissioner, Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority, and Mr. D. G. Bruce, AMIEAust, is now Senior Inspecting Engineer, Warragamba Dam.
- Abstract
The scope of this paper is to indicate the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board's activities in bringing this immense project to completion, with emphasis on difficulties overcome rather than a description of methods that are in general use.
The Board was singularly well equipped to take part in the construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock, as the work was located at the virtual centre of its area of operations. The excavation and concreting involved called for methods identical with those employed by the Board on its dams, reservoirs, aqueducts and pumping stations. The necessary office and field organisation was already in existence. Over and above the normal run of work for years past, the Board was just completing a five-year construction programme involving the expenditure of three million pounds per annum.
