Abstract

An analysis of the performance of a class of hydraulically actuated linkage mechanisms finding common application in practice is demonstrated. A retractable aircraft landing gear is used as an example.
The equation of motion of the mechanism allowing for inertia and gravity is coupled to the characteristics of the fluid system expressed using the unsteady Bernoulli equation.
The second-order non-linear differential equation is solved numerically enabling the determination of the performance of the mechanism which can be optimised according to design criteria by changing the pressure level in the fluid system and the position of the hydraulic ram.
