- Abstract
A comparison is made between experimental and theoretical results for a model parallel chord truss buckling laterally in the elastic range. The chords of the truss are of uniform section. Lateral restraints of varying stiffness are used on the truss and the value at which a well defined change in critical load occurs (the limiting stiffness) is determined.
The theoretical results are based, firstly, on a computer analysis allowing for the interaction between all members of the truss, and secondly, on an approximate procedure obtained by considering the truss to be replaced by an equivalent elastic line with the flexural and torsional properties of the original truss.
The agreement between results is such that the theory of an equivalent elastic line can be used with confidence to give a good estimate of the critical load and the limiting stiffness of the bracing for the type of truss investigated.
