- Abstract
An investigation has been undertaken by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works to determine a valve system suitable for discharging water at high velocity into service reservoirs located in residential areas in the suburbs of Melbourne.
The investigation demonstrated that it may be possible to use fixed-cone jet-dispersion valves discharging to atmosphere, under controlled conditions, to deliver water into service reservoirs, without causing severe vibration, noise, spray or cavitation problems.
It is shown that the energy of a high velocity jet discharging from a fixed-cone jet-dispersion valve can be dissipated in a relatively confined volume of water such as in a service reservoir.
Methods are given for determining the shape and dimensions of the dispersion zone within which the energy of the jet is dissipated, and the average velocity of the jet at any likely point of impact with the floor or sides of the reservoir, thus providing an indication of the possibility of damage to the reservoir structure by scouring.
