Abstract

Theoretically, under internal pressure loading, high local stresses occur at the extreme fibres of a pipe shell near a stiffener ring; and the question is raised as to whether there will be relatively early development of plastic deformations of the shell due to this cause, or will yielding deformations become noticeable only when the mean stresses in the pipe wall are equivalent to the yield point value. A further question arises when the pipe is also carrying beam loads, namely as to what extent the additional stressing influences the occurrence of yielding and the rate of development of plastic deformations in the shell.
Details of experiments with a number of pipe models under internal pressure and beam loading are given; and as well as data on the occurrence of yielding, information is presented covering other aspects of pipe shell behaviour from within the elastic range to rupture.
