- Abstract
This paper deals with the flashover strength of wood and porcelain in combination, by considering the voltage distribution between the elements concerned.
Theoretical calculation methods based on the representation of a wood-porcelain combination by a simplified impedance diagram have been presented for phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase flashovers, These calculations have been substantiated by experimental results.
The insulation strength of the Australian hardwoods, tallowwood and grey ironbark, has been investigated over a wide range of moisture contents and lengths up to 8 ft. for wood alone and in combination with typical 11-kV, 33-kV and 66-kV porcelain insulation. The majority of tests were carried out using dry timber.
Using the information presented, the flashover voltage of wood insulated structures can be predicted with sufficient accuracy for design purposes.
