- Abstract
The subject of power system stability has received increased attention over the past few years due to the general accessibility of large, high-speed digital computers. Because the mathematical model of a multi-machine system is not amenable to direct analysis, some form of numerical solution must be used, and the computer allows an accurate answer to be obtained within a short space of time.
The increased interest is also partly due to the changing characteristics of modem generating sets, and the general use of regulating devices which are capable of exerting an influence on the machine stability. Both of these factors have led to a demand for a more accurate representation of the problem, which can take account of these additional influences.
This paper describes the development of a digital model of a multi-machine power system including a comprehensive machine and regulating device representation, capable of handling a large variety of system problems.
The method is confirmed by comparison with field tests and examples are given of its use in practical cases. An assessment of the accuracy of the normal method of calculating transient stability is made in the light of results obtained using the model.
