- Abstract
Recent work concerning solar energy utilisation has stimulated interest in rock pile thermal storages; Heating and cooling air conditioning cycles using solar heaters and evaporative coolers respectively are described, together with examples to illustrate design methods based on present knowledge.
In order to keep fan running costs low, the piles are operated at particle Reynolds Numbers substantially below 100. Because of the scarcity of heat transfer data at these conditions, heat transfer tests have been conducted, The results from these tests are reported, and compared with published work.
The effect of bed and particle conductances in the flow direction and normal to the flow direction respectively are discussed. The conclusion is made that finite conductance in the flow direction is an important factor, and that it has affected the accuracy of heat transfer coefficients obtained from the tests.
