- Abstract
Engineers Australia's Civil and Structural Colleges announced their awards in October. The recipients are:
Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year:
Andrew Leventhal from GHD was named Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year. In his 35 year career, he has worked on many aspects of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics. He has also contributed to the profession with part-time lecturing and service to the Australian Geomechanics Society and Engineers Australia.John Connell Gold Medal:
Dr Samia Guiguis received the John Connell Gold Medal for her work on improving the performance of concrete structures. She is director of research and technical services at Cement & Concrete Aggregates Australia.Transport Medal 2011:
Professor Buddhima Indraratna from the University of Wollongong received the Transport Medal 2011 for outstanding contribution to Australian transportation engineering. He was recognised for his work in rail track innovation, including special design and construction methods to minimise track degradation, ballast breakage, soil liquefaction, and track settlement.WH Warren Medal:
Dr Scott Smith and Paul Kim received the WH Warren Medal for a paper on fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened reinforced concrete flexural members, published in the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering, Vol 11 No 2.RW Chapman Medal:
Siavash Hashemi and Riadh Al-Mahaidi received the RW Chapman Medal for a paper on bond strength and flexural behaviour of FRP strengthened beams, also in the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering, Vol 11 No 2.Rod McGee Medal 2011:
Chris Davidson is the winner of the Rod McGee Medal 2011. He completed a combined degree in civil engineering with environmental science at Griffith University. He has worked as a volunteer to build a bridge in Namibia and represented the Northern Territory in soccer. For his final year project, he worked with URS Australia to develop a field manual for inspecting wastewater storage dams for the coal seam gas industry. He hopes to work on tunnelling and urban transport projects.
