Abstract

Avon Dam was completed in 1927. It is a 235-ft. high cyclopean masonry dam situated on the Avon River about 60 miles south-west of Sydney. Increases in foundation leakage and uplift, together with evidence of deterioration of concrete strength due to lime leaching and a review of the original design, led to the decision to strengthen the existing dam.
The various proposals for strengthening are briefly discussed, together with a detailed description of the final proposal adopted, viz., by placing approximately 220,000 cu. yd. of sandstone fill against the downstream face of the dam.
The major part of the embankment will consist of sandstone rock crushed and compacted by grid and vibratory rollers to obtain high densities, together with a filter layer of sand and gravel blanketing the dam, the abutments and the foundations.
Various appurtenant works, including major modification to the existing spillway, relocation of the upper outlet channel and extension of the lower outlet are also described.
