- Abstract
The paper presents a critical review of the deflection design provisions of the recent SAA code for reinforced concrete. A brief discussion of the background to the two methods in the code is given. A comparison of the predictions of these methods with the results of experiments that have been reported in the literature shows that the "span to depth" method may lead to excessive deflections. A design aid is developed from the alternative "computed deflection" procedure so that it can also be expressed in the convenient form of allowable span to depth.
