- Abstract
This paper reports the introduction of the educational technique of simulation-gaming into a course in structural design. The object was to transmit information about the working of the design process that could not be acquired through the more conventional media such as books and lectures and to reinforce that which could be. The precise form of the game was developed at Monash using as a basis the general literature on the technique. Students took the roles of client, architect, structural engineer, contractor, local authority, and community representative' involved in the development of a small project. Two types of format were used. One was a 'round-table' situation occupying a single afternoon and the other a completely free interaction occurring over several weeks in the students' own time. Both methods proved useful. A questionnaire showed that student acceptance and involvement was high. A qualitative assessment suggests that the simulation achieved many of its objectives.
