Abstract

The author shows the saving which could be effected in the Postmaster-General's Department by the use of a satisfactory preservative, and discusses the nature of timber diseases and preservatives. The different processes tested by the Department are described and the method finally adopted. The average life of the different timbers in use is given. The paper refers only to undressed hardwood poles.
