Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to review the development in the treatment of water for public supplies in Australia over approximately the last twenty years. The treatment of water discussed is limited to that where specific plants are necessary to provide a water of the standard specified by the American Water Works Association as to clarity, taste, odour and bacterial contamination. However, some reference will be made to softening procedures, but none to chlorination or similar disinfection procedures, which require a special treatment beyond the scope of this paper.
