- Abstract
In 1906 John Monash was Engineer of a thriving company which over the previous 12 years had come to specialise in the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures throughout Victoria. In that year, he and business partners formed the South Australian Reinforced Concrete Company. In following decades, the firm was responsible for significant multi-storey buildings in central Adelaide; elevated service reservoirs throughout the State; and a wharf at Port Adelaide. Only a few bridges were built but two were of particular interest. Initially, design work was carried out in Monash's Melbourne office, but responsibility shifted to the Adelaide office over the next few years, with Monash maintaining a role as mentor and consultant. This paper looks at his establishment and staffing of SARC; provides an overview of its major projects; and suggests some reasons why it was less successful as a business than the Victorian operation.
