- Abstract
The development of a satisfactory highway system in Northern Australia is made difficult by high rainfall intensity and variability and the generally flat terrain with inadequate channel systems. Periods of inundation very much exceed those experienced in many other areas of Australia. The necessity to forge ahead has meant that in past years when knowledge and data were limited, innovative engineering was required. Although data is still comparatively sparse, recent advances in analytical techniques and an improving data base have resulted in a greater understanding of the impact of flooding on highway proposals.
