- Description
This paper, No. 1711, was presented before the Engineering Conference, 1963, in Adelaide from 29th April to 3rd May, 1963.
At the time the work described was carried out, Mr. L. A. Endersbee, BCE AMIEAust, was Project Engineer (Designs) for the Great Lake Power Development, and Mr. E. O. Hofto, BE AMIEAust, was an Engineer in the Structures Section of the Civil Design Division. Mr. Endersbee is now Group Leader supervising the Structures, Dams and Penstocks Sections; Mr. Hofto is in charge of civil construction of Poatina power station.

- Abstract
Poatina underground power station, currently under construction by the Hydro-Electric Commission of Tasmania, is designed for six high-head vertical-shaft Pelton turbines driving six 50,000-kW alternators. The machine hall is 300 ft, long, 45 ft. wide and 85 ft. high, located 500ft. underground. The factors considered in the selection of station layout are described. Particular attention is given to the design of the underground opening, in an area where the natural stress is high with respect to the strength of the rock. Rock failure under stress was observed in the exploratory openings. Design features developed to suit these conditions are described, including a technique of de-stressing to limit boundary stresses to safe values, As excavation proceeded, stresses in the critical roof area were measured and compared with predictions from photo-elastic analyses. Permanent support to the opening was achieved by use of grouted, tensioned rock bolts and a relatively thin reinforced gunite lining.
