- Abstract
Over the past year, CSIRO has made intensive effort to develop a credible framework for determining the areas of research it should be pursuing to best deliver benefits to Australia. This effort has been led by the CSIRO Executive Committee, with assistance from Corporate and Institute planners, the Office of the Chief Executive and the Board and the Research Data Office. It has received input through a series of equivalent Institute workshops, involving Institute Directors and Chiefs of Divisions. The Board has regularly monitored progress and provided feedback.
The approach has been widely conveyed to interested organisations and bodies, particularly by the Chief Executive. We believe that the outcome of this effort will be of interest to a wide range of individuals and organisations involved in priority determination. The purpose of this paper is therefore twofold;
* to inform CSIRO staff and others about the methods used by the CSIRO Executive Committee to reach conclusions about the areas of research likely to provide the best return to Australia and their subsequent translation of these into decisions on broad reallocation of CSIRO's resources; and
* to provide a detailed record of the approach and its development for those more interested in the process than the outcomes.
