- Abstract
A computer controlled data collection system which uses the switched Telecom network has been developed by the South Australian Department of Marine and Harbors and the University of Adelaide Civil Engineering Department.
The system will be used to collect ocean wave data from remote sites and transmit it directly to the Civil Engineering Dept PDP 11/34 computer which will process and store the data. The system comprises a digital output wave recorder, linked via V.H.F. radio to the remote shore station which communicates with the University computer over the Telecom switched network.
The computer acts as system intelligence as well as being used for data storage and processing. It is linked to an automatic dialling unit to allow it to initiate calls to retrieve stored data, or initiate the collection of a new data record.
The remote shore station is microprocessor based and linked to the Telecom network via an auto-answer modem. The programming of the microprocessor will enable it to command the beacon to transmit a new data record or transmit already collected data to the University computer.
The system will provide an economical method of data retrieval from remote sites where large data losses due to equipment malfunction may be critical.
