Description

This Paper, No. 529, originated in the Sydney Division of The Institution. An Address on the same subject was presented by the author, as retiring Chairman, at the Annual General Meeting of Sydney Division on the 21st March, 1935.

Abstract

This paper (constituting Record No. 13 of the Charles Kolling Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory) reviews a number of methods in which models are used for the experimental study of complicated stress distributions, special attention being given to applications of photo-elasticity, and to recent developments in "analogy" methods. The examples used for illustration have been drawn from research work performed in the Peter Nicol Russell School of Engineering of the University of Sydney, including work now in progress in the Kolling Research Laboratory.
