- Abstract
A scheme is described whereby graduate scholars are tutored in the practice of disputation in which parties sustain, attack and defend a thesis. In the Mechanical Engineering Department at Monash University, candidates for the degree of M.Eng. Sc. and Ph.D. are required to present a proposition; to justify it by written and spoken argument; and to defend it publicly against the prepared attack of a panel, and perhaps of others. The candidate's performance is formally assessed. The subject of the proposition usually relates to the candidate's research. Throughout candidature, instruction and practice in disputation are provided. We review the aims and procedures of this scheme and outline the experience of three years of operation.
