- Abstract
The Pacific Cable provided an important, timely, and secure connection with governments, trade, the media and families in the UK, Canada, and Australasia during both peace and wartime. It also brought a high level of technology in terms of construction and operation with development of cable manufacture and dedicated cable laying ships. Logistics in shipping cable from the UK to the route became critical to ensure that the cable was laid in a timely and ordered manner with minimal delay. Operationally, remote cable stations were established on several Pacific islands (Norfolk Island, Fiji, and Fanning Island). On Norfolk Island, the Cable bifurcated to Fiji and New Zealand. Terminal stations established at Southport (Queensland Gold Coast), Bamfield (Vancouver Island, Canada), and Cable Bay (Northland, New Zealand), enabled connection to existing overland systems. Numerous progressive updates ensured ongoing endurance of the Cable.
