Abstract

The paper is written in two stages.

Stage I covers the period up to July, 1939. It describes the initiation, experimental investigation, and development of a supplementary water supply for Newcastle, N.S.W., derived from sandbeds. The objective of this scheme was, whilst supplementing the existing gravitation supply from the Chichester River storage reservoir, to test the suitability of this source for future expansion by practical trial over a considerable period of years.
The location and extent of the sandbeds are stated, the history of the project from its original proposal to the eventual delivery of the water for consumption is given, observations are made on the source of the water, quantity available, and development of design ; the installation is described, and the results obtained when brought into service are recorded. Appendices give particulars of some of the experimental work and of the evolution of certain features of the plant and construction methods followed.

Stage II extends up to the middle of 1942. It describes the extension of the installation dealt with in Stage I, but refers principally to the expansion of the scheme, at an earlier date than was originally contemplated, into a major amplification of the Newcastle Water Supply.

During the period covered by Stage I the area was generally known as the Stockton-Raymond Terrace Sandbeds, but in Stage II the scheme was designated the Tomago Sandbeds Water Supply.
