- Abstract
Construction of an experimental lock and weir on the Darling River at Bourke was commenced in June 1895. A description of this lock and weir is given followed by an account of its construction. The latter includes problems arising from the contractor's temporary bridge obstructing navigation and the subsequent completion of the project by the New South Wales Government. Consequent questions in the Colonial Parliament and legal action by the contractors against the Government are reviewed. Finally, the implications of these matters for subsequent similar structures are considered.
