Summary
The Priestley Medal has been awarded biennially (in odd-numbered years) by the Royal Meteorological Society Australian Branch and its successor, the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, since 1983. It recognises excellence in meteorology or oceanographic research by a mid-career scientist, for work conducted substantially within Australia, and for significant contributions to the respective organisations. Charles Priestley had a central role in the development of atmospheric sciences in Australia and was Chief of the CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Physics (and its predecessors) from 1946 to 1973.
