'On 14 March 2000, John Foxton Ross Kerr, Emeritus Professor of Pathology at the University of Queensland, shared the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize for the description of apoptosis, a form of cell death. The prize is considered to be one of the most prestigious European awards in science, second only to the Nobel Prize.'
