- Abstract
The inland bulk transportation of solids has traditionally been handled by road, rail and other mechanical means. With the expansion of mineral production and the increasing cost of transportation, coupled with environmental and other pressures alternative modes of transportation must be considered. Slurry pipelines have now become an accepted means of solids transportation and offer potential economic, technological and environmental advantages in many cases. A number of long distance slurry pipelines conveying large tonnages of materials such as coal, limestone, copper, iron and other mineral ores are presently in operation. Extensive new pipeline systems have been planned throughout the world to handle the increasing demand for transportation of minerals and other solid materials. This paper summarises the present state of the art for slurry transportation operations.
