Abstract

This paper contains an account of experiments carried out in Cambridge University Engineering Laboratory during 1925. The author has already published experiments on the behaviour of a particular engine, using Cambridge town gas as a fuel, and a further set of experiments, with carbon-monoxide as the fuel. The present paper deals with experiments made on the same engine with pure hydrogen and pure methane. It is hoped that, as the behaviour of these gaseous fuels in an internal combustion engine has not hitherto been investigated, an account of the results, and a comparison with those on the other fuels, will provide a subject of considerable scientific interest to the engineer engaged in the design and production of internal combustion engines.
