Abstract

The importance of mechanical engineering in this war is now generally appreciated. It is beginning to be realised too that our mechanical engineering must be better than that of our enemies. Conceding this, engineers must have a better understanding of mechanical engineering.
For many people this can be most quickly and easily acquired by the study of books, for they are daily in contact with the practical realities of engineering, and their war work is of such importance that they cannot afford to leave it for a time to return to school, college or university. Many of them owe it to themselves and to their country to resume their studies by the aid of textbooks in every moment that they can spare.
It was to help such people that the following lists of selected test books were compiled. Some do not know what books to buy and are guided by booksellers anxious to empty their shelves, or by the chance remarks of a friend whose interest may be vastly different from their own. The writer has been asked so often in recent months to give advice on the buying of books that he believes that a real need will be satisfied if some lists of selected textbooks are compiled to aid the enthusiastic engineer prepared to study textbooks.
