This paper, No.603, originated in the Melbourne Division of The Institution.
The author, Aubrey Frederic Burstall, DSc PhD MIMechE, is Professor of Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Melbourne.

Abstract

This paper describes the various stages of a piece of experimental research work and emphasises the value of research as a training for engineers for industry. Some changes in the teaching of engineering subjects at the university are suggested, and the author describes the building and equipment requirements of a university engineering laboratory to meet his views. The need for a change in outlook on these matters is expressed and the author suggests that more research work in the universities and works in Australia is vital to the prosperity of secondary industries in the Commonwealth.
