This paper, No.695, originated in the Melbourne Division of the institution.
The authors are, Professor Aubrey Frederic Burstall, DSc PhD MIEAust, Dean of The Faculty of Engineering, and Mansergh Shaw, WhSch MEng AMIEAust, Senior Lecturer in Engineering, at the University of Melbourne.

The new workshops in the Engineering School at the University of Melbourne were conceived when a special committee of the University Council was authorised to make an appeal to Victorian industrialists to contribute funds for the reconstruction and enlargement of the engineering laboratories.
The special committee comprised:
* Mr W. Russell Grimwade, BSc, Chairman;
* Mr Essington Lewis;
* Dr R. E. Priestley, MC MA AgrDip(Canb) DSc(Melb), Vice Chancellor, The University of Melbourne;
* Emeritus Professor H. Payne, MIEAust MInstCE MIMechE HonFRAeS;
* Professor A. F. Burstall, DSc PhD MIMechE MIEAust; and
* Mr G. H. Vasey, BCE AMIEAust, Secretary.

Abstract

The new engineering workshops at the University of Melbourne were constructed and equipped as the result of an appeal for contributions for the purpose. The paper describes the design and general character of the workshops and the plant and equipment installed.
