Description

This paper, No.776, originated in the Melbourne Division of The Institution, and was presented before a General Meeting of the Division on 18th Nov 1941. The author E. A. Kaye, BEngSc, is Argus and Stawell Research Scholar, University of Melbourne, and A. F. Burstall, DSc MIEAust, is Professor of Engineering, University of Melbourne.

Abstract

This paper describes the results of original experimental work done with a stationary test producer in the laboratory. Temperatures of fire at the nozzle and at the grate, pressure drop over producer, gas quantities and analyses, were determined for a range of nozzle diameters from 1/8 in.-1 in., and fire lengths of from 6 in.-13 in. The range of gas rates tested was from 1/2-70 c.f.m.
From the results, an equilibrium curve has been obtained, and the effect of changing the variables upon gas quality, grate temperature, and pressure drop, have provided valuable data for the designer of a gas generator.
As an example of the use of results, the authors have estimated suitable nozzle sizes and fire lengths for charcoal gas producers to be used with engines developing 2-1/2 - 40 b.h.p.
