- Abstract
The conventional process for the production of copper oxide involves leaching of copper bearing ores with ammonia ammonium carbonate solution followed by boiling of the copper ammine solution. This process cannot be used to treat copper bearing residues from metallurgical processing plants. These residues contain significant quantities of impurities such as zinc, lead, antimony and arsenic which contaminate the leach liquor and the copper oxide product. This paper describes a process that has been developed to remove such impurities from a copper ammine solution obtained by leaching copper lead drosses from the Imperial Smelting Furnace at Sulphide Corporation, Cockle Creek. Purification is carried out in two stages. In the first stage the copper to ammonia ratio is maximised by aeration at 60 degrees Centigrade. Under these conditions zinc is partially precipitated whilst antimony, lead and arsenic are completely precipitated. In the second stage the remaining zinc is removed from the copper ammine solution by solvent extraction with D2EHPA. The purified copper ammine solution is then boiled to precipitate copper oxide. The two stage purification process has been tested in a mini pilot plant, operating at a production rate of 12 kg of copper oxide per day. It has proved that the purification process is technically feasible for the production of high purity copper oxide.
