On 20 June 1985, in Canberra, Prof Tom Fink, Chief Defence Scientist, was presented with the A G M Michell Medal, and delivered an address on "An Australian defence science perspective on mechanical engineering". The article summarised the key points in the address.
The article also noted that at the same function, Richard Frost from the University of NSW was presented with the George Julius Medal for 1984, for the paper "Systematic strategy for functionally related design tasks", published in the Mechanical Engineering Transactions.
