This paper, No.1042, originated in the Sydney Division of The Institution, and was presented before a General Meeting of the Electrical and Communications Engineering Branch of that Division on September 28th, 1949.
The author, W. R. Blunden, BSc BE AMIEAust, is a member of the Staff of the C.S.I.R.O., Mathematical Instruments Section, and part-time Lecturer in Control Systems at the University of Sydney.

Abstract

The principal objects of this paper are:- firstly, to show how the complex variety of control mechanisms -ranging from the simple operation of switching on the light to the control, with accuracy, of the 2000 ton main turret of a battleship - may be rationalised so that the spectacular advances in a highly developed field may be utilised in an under-developed field or applied rapidly to a new one; secondly, to describe a number of the more striking types of control systems so that their possibilities may be appreciated.
