- Abstract
Concrete has been extensively used as a shielding material for protecting equipment and personnel from harmful radiations, and is a satisfactory material for this purpose.
In present designs, the necessity for ensuring safety has led to precautions which may prove unnecessarily expensive, and research has been undertaken to determine the nuclear and physical properties of the available materials and to assess correctly the stresses arising from temperature and volume changes. The major properties in the temperature range up to 300°C. have been established and the suitability of a number of materials assessed.
Recommendations have been made for the selection of materials and mix proportions for concrete containing conventional aggregates and aggregates of high density. A method of calculating thermal strains in reinforced concrete has been put forward and suggestions have been made for the choice of appropriate reinforcement. A scheme has been developed for controlling the temperature distribution in a shield so as to allow of substantially higher temperature rises than are at present tolerated.
